Best Resident DJ

DJ Boris, Pacha, New York
After setting the attendance record at crobar (5,400 on a single night), NYC DJ Boris Inzhin did what so few entertainers do: He left on a high note. He moved to 2,400-cap Pacha late last fall, before crobar would change operators and ultimately close for good in 2007. "Crobar was a great room," Boris says. "I just feel like Pacha is a better fit for my sound. It's a smaller, more intimate room with a banging sound system." His fans seem to agree: In his first year, some 30,000 of them have passed through Pacha's doors to hear him spin. "It's been like home to me since I got there," he says. -CM

DJ Vice, LAX, Las Vegas
From his perch on the chaotic main stage at Best New Venue nominee LAX, DJ Vice watches the world he controls. Whether dropping a crunk-ified hip-hop jam, a funk-dified R&B tune, a straight-up rock anthem or some highly danceable combination of two or more seemingly incongruous genres, the worshipping masses gladly do his bidding, working up a serious sweat in the process. It's quite a feat, really. Of course, Vice has been there, done that. Before landing on LAX's runway, he opened the Hard Rock's Body English in 2002 and the Venetian's Tao four years later, gigs that undoubtedly prepared him to slip into the captain's chair of the Luxor venue, and play conductor to a clientele that's as diverse as they come. -KC
Kaskade, SmartBar, Chicago
Though Kaskade has logged scores of tour dates since his latest mix album dropped on Ultra late last summer, his role as a SmartBar resident has not diminished. "He's our best resident and one of the nicest guys I have ever met in this industry," says SmartBar booking director James Amato. "Kaskade sells the club out every time he plays. No other resident of ours comes close to selling as many advance tickets." With an exclusive bimonthly residency, Kaskade's home club crowd is varied in musical taste but consistent in high energy. In '07, Kaskade garnered national press with Billboard chart-topping pop remixes and a tri-city New Year's Eve gig, but Chi-town fans know the club he calls home. -CM

Louie Vega, Cielo, New York
In 2004, living legend/Grammy winner Vega nestled into a sweet weekly Wednesday shindig at Cielo. Three and a half years later, Roots - which also features Blaze member and West End Records head honcho Kevin Hedge - is a U.S. house institution. Vega plays soulful house new and old, with smatterings of hip-hop and jazz. And the New York faithful know that even if their DJ hops the pond for gigs in Europe or Asia, he'll be back home next week.
Richie Santana, Deko Lounge, Sayreville, N.J.
Diametrically opposed to the touring DJ, the resident DJ defines himself by calling a single venue his home, developing a loyal weekly following, and consistently exceeding the crowd's expectations. Richie Santana certainly embodies the term with his six-year (and running) residency at central New Jersey's Deko Lounge. His big-room tribal house sounds have delighted the dancefloor and built Deko's Saturdays into a haven for Jersey house-heads. Santana recently parlayed the gig into a residency at Manhattan superclub Pacha, and a mixed compilation with childhood friend/DJ-ing partner Peter Bailey entitled "Mind Control," soon to be released on Star 69. -RL
