Thursday nights are back in New York, thanks to DHN. From local favorites (Victor Calderone, DJ Boris, Danny Tenaglia) to the internationally alluring (David Guetta, DJ Vibe, Sander Kleinenberg, Steve Angello), the party brings in an array of DJs who are used to playing in much larger rooms. But that's the appeal. "Big-name DJs in the confines of Cielo's intimate setting make for some of the best sets of the year," says Benny Soto, who promotes the party with Rob Fernandez, creator of three-time Best Party winner Asseteria. -CM

Steve Aoki and DJ AM's one-year-old Sunday night bash is ground zero of indie dance hipsterdom. The party gets packed early with sweet incentives including free desserts (yes, there are banana splits) and a keg of Sapporo that sits in the middle of the dancefloor until the thirsty and thrifty patrons polish it off. "The crowd that goes there is not your typical L.A. models and poseurs, they go and dance," says unlikely fan DJ Paul Oakenfold, who lives nearby. "It reminds me of the early days of Jazzy Jay and Afrika Bambaataa in New York. These kids come up from the lower end of Hollywood, not money though, and they dance. It's one of the best nights out there." -CM

Three-time Best Party nominee Mixed Elements is operating in its fifth year as a weekly event and still going strong. The party continues to draw a big crowd (1,500 each week) with top DJs like David Guetta, Deep Dish, Tiesto, and The Crystal Method, plus acrobats and theatrical elements to give loyal patrons new reasons to keep coming back. Local members currently number over 100,000. The party continues at Ruby Skye in San Francisco, and the company expands its reach to annual WMC parties, national events for FHM and releases on its record label Mixed Elements Music. -CM

The ongoing visual extravaganza that is A/V continues into its second year at Jet, and it continues to grow under promoter Steven Lockwood and vid-whiz Roonie G, a three-peat Best Resident VJ nominee for 2008. Only in Vegas could a weekly attract and re-attract 2,000 patrons to gawk at the club's extensive video system (also nominated), which features a Traxon panel covered ceiling, as well as a half-dozen drop screens and twice that amount of 50-inch plasmas brought in special for the event. Highlights of 2007 have included G's collaboration with Live Digital Drums, plus guests including our favorite '80s star Juliette Lewis and her band The Licks. -CM |
